United in the Community
This section will be expanded and improved in presentation going forward but for the moment contains some key items.
As a supporters owned and community focused club, Banbury United are always keen to make a contribution to the local community in whatever way it can.
Here are some of the initiatives that the club has introduced:
1. Spencer Social Group
The Spencer Social Group is run by Age UK and is suitable for older persons who are perhaps retired and miss the company of former workmates and would welcome a social morning. It take place at the Banbury United Clubhouse and runs on the first and third Wednesday of each month. Activities vary from session to session - quizzes, floor games, guest speakers etc. It has been very successful so far and is open to everyone, not just United supporters but we would specifically love to see some more of our older supporters down there enjoying the fun. It runs from 10.30am to midday and before the fun gets underway and afterwards there will be tea, coffee, cakes and biscuits provided by the Football Club. We don’t go around checking birth certificates and turning people away - so come on down!
2. Supporters of the “Keep the Horton General” Campaign
The club are supporters of the local campaign to maintain services at the Horton Hospital in Banbury. Recently the club arranged a supporters sponsored walk around the town which not only raised money for the Football Club but also a percentage of funds raised was donated to the Campaign.
3. Citizen Advice Bureau Banbury
The club have entered into a partnership with the Citizen Advice Bureau in Banbury. The Football Cub and Citizen Advice are supporting each other with joint ventures and advertising the news of each other’s respective organisations across printed and social media. The club recognises the sterling work that Citizens Advice are doing in our town, being in the main a volunteer organisation, who help a vast number of people in our community. The club wants to help promote the work they do and in return they are supporting us in our aims to attract more people to come and watch games. We would also encourage our fans to utilise the fantastic service Citizens Advice provide. Pat Wood (Chief Executive) of Citizens Advice in Banbury also commented commenting on the partnership said “It’s very important that we convey our message of the services we can offer out into the community. We approached Banbury United as a community organisation because they are very high profile in our town and we think they can help us to raise our presence locally. It’s a mutual partnership and we’ll be doing all we can to support and promote the community efforts going on at Banbury United as well.”
The club are in partnership with Didcot based “Bollox” a charity business that highlights and raises money for Testicular Cancer through sales of Stylish Quality Boxer Shorts. As part of the deal, the club takes orders for pairs of boxer shorts in their club shop with a percentage of sales going to both the club and to testicular cancer research. The aim is to raise the profile of Bollox on the Non-League football scene and at the same time raise valuable funds both for the charity and our club. Speaking on the deal Commercial Assistant Manager Warren Bartlett said “We are delighted that Bollox have agreed to pair up with Banbury United in promoting their business charity. Male Cancers such as Testicular are something that guys really need to be aware of and sometimes we take our health for granted. Having the humorous side of Bollox involved with our club will hopefully open a few eyes on just how important it is to look after yourself.”
5. Working with Frank Wise School
The club is currently working with the Frank Wise School in Banbury and others to offer free admission to those with autism and additional needs, along with a carer, at selected home games throughout the season.
