Weymouth 1-1 Banbury United

Honours even in classic FA Cup tie

Banbury earned a replay in their Emirates FA Cup first qualifying round tie at Weymouth after a thrilling 1-1 draw and will now host the Terras at the Banbury Plant Hire Community Stadium this Tuesday evening.

Although Weymouth started strongly Banbury had the best two early chances. On seven minutes good work by Jordy Ngathe saw a cross to Jack Finch and his touch set up Giorgio Rasulo who couldn't make a clean contact. Soon after the home team's keeper Jordon Seabright was caught out of his goal but Ravi Shamsi's shot from 30 yards wide out narrowly missed the unguarded net.

Weymouth came strongly into the game and James Goff did well to keep out long range efforts from Josh McQuoid and Brandon Goodship. However McQuoid played a key role in the 35th minute opening goal. Goff could only parry his 30 yard shot, Abdulai Baggie stabbed the rebound goalwards and it went in via Charlie Wise's head.

Banbury were on top for the final ten minutes of the half with Seabright making two good saves, first palming a Greg Kaziboni shot over the bar and then saving well from a Ricky Johnson header to keep the home side ahead at the break.

Urged on by a great following of fans who made the long trip from North Oxfordshire, Banbury stated the second half strongly. There was a great chance for Ricky Johnson to equalise early in the second half but his shot sailed over the bar after good work from Kaziboni. However Banbury's pressure told when Ben Thompson fouled Lee Henderson in the area after a corner and Giorgio Rasulo drilled the spot kick high to the right of Seabright on 51 minutes.

The teams traded chances as both teams looked to take the initiative. Baggie and Goodship combined well for Weymouth but Goodship fired just wide in the box. Kaziboni was inches away from a Shamsi cross when any touch would have diverted the ball goalwards.

Weymouth looked like they would retake the lead on 74 minutes after the referee adjudged Ngathe to have fouled Baggie in the box and awarded a penalty. However, Goff saved Goodship's spot kick with a great diving save to his right.

Both teams continued to press for the winner but it wasn't forthcoming and after a classic FA Cup tie it ended honours even.
