Tomorrow (Tuesday/New Year’s Day) United entertain Alvechurch in a Southern League Premier Central Division game 3.00pm kick-off

This is the first time that we will have met Alvechurch in league action since season 1981/82 when both clubs were members of the Southern League Midlands Division. That season was the fourth consecutive season of league games between the sides with United having a poor record against the Worcestershire side, failing to win any of the eight games, albeit five of them were drawn. Whilst having no wins against Alvechurch in league games between 1978/79 and 1981/82, United did beat them 2-0 at the Spencer Stadium in an FA Cup First Qualifying Round game in season 1980/81. There have been two other cup games between the sides since, both in the Birmingham Senior Cup and in consecutive seasons. Season 2006/07 saw United win 6-1 at Alvechurch in a Second Round game with former Wycombe Wanderers Football League striker Jermaine McSporran scoring four of the goals. The following season United again won at Alvechurch, this time a single goal from Troy Bryan proving enough for United to win a First Round game.

Alvechurch finished runners-up in the Northern Premier League Division One South last season to earn promotion to Premier Division level but were transferred across to the Southern League in the summer restructuring. They have made a very good start to life at the higher level currently sitting in eighth place with 33 points from 21 games, three places and three points above ourselves though they do have two games in hand on us. Like ourselves, Alvechurch went into the Christmas and New Year period in good form having just won at Royston Town and Lowestoft Town but again like us have lost their first two games over the Holiday period, losing 4-2 at Redditch United on Boxing Day and then losing 3-0 at home to Tamworth on Saturday.

For ourselves, after defeats at Stratford Town and Halesowen Town, manager Mike Ford will be looking for his charges to bounce back and start the New Year rather differently result wise to how the old one finished!! Mike, in his post Halesowen interview, has suggested that there will be changes in personnel for the game – we shall have to wait and see!
