Clevedon deservedly win 2-1 on the night and by the same scoreline on aggregate to take the Southern League Cup back to North Somerset.

United’s first ever Southern League Cup final appearance ended in huge disappointment as they lost 2-1 against Clevedon Town in this second-leg game. There can be no complaints from United about the result as the Division One side thoroughly deserved their victory, winning 2-1 on aggregate following a goalless first leg in North Somerset.

United started well and Ricky Johnson tested Jason Mellor early on with a fierce shot but with away goals counting double at the end of 90 minutes, the goalless first leg meant Clevedon would always have a clear advantage if they scored and this they did as early as the 11th minute when Henry Muggeridge exchanged passes with Chas Hemmings on the edge of the box before beating Andy Kemp with a low angled drive.

United fought back well though and got a deserved equaliser in the 23rd minute. Joe Coleman’s free-kick picked out Ben Polk on the left wing and his excellent delivery to the far post saw Josh Cole rise highest to send a looping header over Mellor into the far corner.

However, United’s performance in the second half was very poor indeed, continually giving the ball away to the opposition and rarely looking like scoring a second goal. With Clevedon dominating proceedings it was no surprise when in the 75th minute Hemmings pounced on a defensive error to race clear, rounded Kemp and slipped the ball into an empty net to give Clevedon a fully deserved 2-1 lead.

Now, United needed to score twice to win the Cup, as a 2-2 draw would have given it to Clevedon on the away goals rule, and, to be frank, this never looked likely.
