Banbury's eight match unbeaten run comes to an end

Banbury’s unbeaten start to the season was ended by St Neots who ran out deserved 3-1 winners in Saturday’s league game.

After the first fifteen minutes no one would have predicted the final result as Banbury continued where they had left of against Weymouth in the week. There was a good chance for Charlie Wise who headed straight at visitor’s keeper Irons. Jack Self and Ravi Shamsi also went close. It was no surprise when Banbury took the lead on 17 minutes, Ricky Johnson flicked on a James Goff free kick and Shamsi was able to lob the advancing keeper to give Banbury the lead.

More Banbury pressure ensued but St Neots looked dangerous on the break and on 31 minutes Claudio Ofosu was allowed too much space on the right and his cross was steered home from close range by Nabil Shariff. Shariff followed this up six minutes later getting on the end of a long ball and shrugging off Wise’s challenge to fire home. The game had been turned on its head and St Neots took the lead into the break thanks to Irons who saved well from Greg Kaziboni.

Banbury had a great opportunity early in the second half when Kaziboni found himself in acres of space in the box but spent too long deciding on what option to take and the chance went begging. They were punished when a cross from the right wasn’t dealt with and Dylan Williams shot home from the edge of the box with thirty minutes left.

St Neots did well to take the sting out of the game as Banbury pressed in search of goals. A Johnson shot brought a good save out of Irons who also dealt with a Shamsi free kick, At the other end Goff denied Shariff with a diving save.

Banbury were unable to create any sustained pressure on the St Neots goal and it was the visitors deservedly celebrating at the final whistle.
