Banbury would have the better of the opening fifteen minutes though there were no decent chances for either side in this period.

However, on the quarter of an hour mark both sides went close within 60 seconds of each other. Firstly a low cross from Banbury's Tom WInters from the left was hacked away just a foot in front of the goal line by Sam Hodgson just before the incoming Jefferson Louis could reach the ball. Then at the other end a good run down by the left by Adam Burnicle saw him cut inside before unleashing a shot which was deflected just wide for a corner.

Shildon matched Banbury as the half developed further though Banbury went close in the 27th minute when a corner from the left by Winters saw Luke Carnell get his head first to the ball eight yards out, his effort was though headed away off the line by Billy Gruelich-Smith, the ball going only as far as George Nash 20 yards out who shot over the bar.

Three minutes later though and Banbury took the lead when Louis did well to get a cross in from down by the goal line inside the Shildon penalty area and though Nick Liversedge palmed the ball away it only went as far as Winters coming in down the left who struck the ball superbly well back across the goal into the top far corner of the net.

However, it took Shildon just three minutes to equalise. Dan Moore was tackled by Carnell on the edge of the Banbury penalty area, the ball ran to Gruelich-Smith five yards outside the area, who though not appearing to hit the ball cleanly, found Burnicle 16 yards out, the Shildon striker turned sharply and hit an excellent low shot past Harding into the bottom corner of the net.

Five minutes before the interval, Winters put Ravi Shamsi away down the left who then got the better of Dan Groves before crossing low into the centre where Marc Ellison just in front of Louis couldn't cut the ball out which thus ran through to the United striker in a central position eight yards out though, perhaps not expecting the ball to come past Ellison, he was unable to control it as it sort of hit him and bounced up into the arms of the grateful visiting custodian.

Two minutes into stoppage time at the end of the half and Shildon were close to taking the lead when Moore lifted the ball down the centre through to Burnicle who got ahead of the Banbury defence forcing Harding to come off his line to try and clear the ball but Burnicle got their first only to see his lob over the Banbury goalkeeper go just wide.

Banbury began the second half well. Within 60 seconds Louis had hit the side netting from a narrow angle down the right and a minute later a corner from the left taken by Winters saw Carnell's header down into the ground bounce up and look bound for the top of the net but Liversedge in the Shildon goal pulled off an excellent save tipping the ball over the bar for a corner. Moments later a high cross in from the right by Charlie Hawtin saw Louis get up above James Harwood at the six yard line but his header went straight at the visiting custodian.

Having survived Banbury's good spell without conceding, Shildon would start to match Banbury again and they would take the lead on 57 minutes when a cross was whipped in from the left by Dodds with Dan Moore getting his head to the ball at the near post and directing it across goal into the top far corner of the net.

On 65 minutes a free kick 10 yards inside the Shildon half taken by Winters was pumped deep into the visitor's penalty area where Jefferson Louis got his head to the ball eight yards out but under pressure his header went straight at Liversedge.

However, two minutes later and it was 3-1 to Shildon when a low cross in from the right by Matty Robson found Burnicle in space on the edge of the six yard box and the Shildon striker had the time to pick his spot and stroke the ball past Harding.

Banbury really should have pulled a goal back in the 79th minute when a cross in from the right by Louis saw the incoming Winters at the far post, with the goal seemingly at his mercy, somehow failing to connect with his header properly. Then a minute later United were so close again to scoring when a shot from the edge of the Shildon area by Winters was turned goalwards from 12 yards out by Louis and beat Liversedge only for the ball to be hacked off the line by Hodgson.

But the goal that United had been threatening arrived three minutes later when a cross in from the left by WInters was headed in from the six yard line by substitute Ricky Johnson.

In the 85th minute United were so close to an equaliser. A corner from the left by Winters saw Luke Carnell's header from 12 yards blocked by a defender three yards out, the ball rebounded back to Carnell who hit a fierce low shot from 8 yards which beat Liversedge only for the ball to be hacked off the line by another defender.

Two minutes into stoppage time and a cross in from the left by Shamsi saw Johnson's glancing header go just wide but the equaliser would not come and it is the Northern League side that go into the draw for the Fourth Qualifying Round on Monday.

Overall the 90 minutes there seemed little between the sides and though Banbury had more chances than Shildon, on this day Shildon took theirs whilst in that department it was not Banbury's day.
