Banbury United Ladies beat Premier Division Reading Town 4-0 at the Spencer Stadium this afternoon to reach the Second Round of the League Cup

Division 1 North side Banbury United had a comfortable 4-0 win in the First Round of the Southern Region Women’s Football League Cup over Premier Division Reading Town at the Spencer Stadium this afternoon.

With Reading having arrived with just nine players, and one of those being prohibited to play by the referee due to the wearing of jewellery which could not be removed, this game became an unexpected comfortable win for Banbury United Ladies.

Banbury went ahead as early as the fifth minute when Rochelle Buick found herself in plenty of space and with just the goalkeeper to beat she competently slotted the ball past the visiting custodian. Banbury with their numerical advantage continued to dominate the game as the half developed though Reading did well initially to restrict the clear opportunities for the home side.

Not surprisingly the visitors began to tire as the half entered its final quarter of an hour. On 35 minutes Buick had another good chance but as she tried to round the goalkeeper, the custodian did well to smother the ball at Buick’s feet. On 40 minutes Lucy Durnin set up Buick but this time Banbury’s leading goalscorer scuffed her shot wide.

However, the second goal for Banbury finally came on 42 minutes when Rachel Dunbar put in a cross from the right which was met by Veitch from around six yards and though her effort hit the post it rebounded to her and she made no mistake at the second attempt. Banbury went close again in the final minute of the half when Serina Milenkovic crossed from the left to the far post where Sarah Rhind did well to get her head to the ball, only to see it go narrowly wide.

Just three minutes into the second half the result of the game was effectively put beyond any doubt when a good move ended with Buick nipping in to take the ball wide of the goalkeeper on her left and then firing the ball home from a narrow angle. On 52 minutes a cross from the right fell to Claire Allen just three yards out but quite remarkably with an open goal she managed to put the ball well over the bar. By this time though it was clear this was not going to matter and just two minutes later Buick completed her hat-trick (her third in consecutive games) to make the score 4-0.

With the game won, Banbury manager Andy Veitch opted to make a triple substitution to give the rest of his squad a decent amount of game time. Chances continued to fall to Banbury including Allen going close when lobbing the goalkeeper only to see the ball go inches wide of the post and Hannah Tomsett having a powerful drive well saved by the goalkeeper who tipped the ball round the post for a corner.

Whilst no fault of the Banbury United Ladies and one must appreciate the visitors fulfilling the fixture rather than crying off, the 11 v 8 scenario, one has to be honest, did no credit to the standing of the Southern Region Women’s Football League or Senior Ladies football in general.

Banbury United: Emma George, Jodie Aldridge, Jenny Hoggins, Claire Foster, Serina Milenkovic, Sarah Rhind, Rachel Dunbar, Claire Allen, Rochelle Buick, Sophie Veitch, Lucy Durnin. Used Subs: Hannah Tomsett, Zoe Dyndor, and Ellan Brooks-Saunders. (Triple Substitution on 57 minutes for Aldridge, Dunbar and Buick)
