After a fairly equal first ten minutes it would be Biggleswade who would begin to have much the better of the game. In the 15th minute a free-kick pumped into the Banbury penalty area from the left was only cleared out as far as Craig Daniel on the edge of the area on the right, his fierce shot going wide of the far post.

Two minutes later and a Russell Short shot from the edge of the Banbury penalty area forced Jack Harding to dive low to his right to make the save.

The home side continued to apply pressure on the Banbury defence. In the 25th minute a Rhys Hoenes shot from 20 yards went straight at Harding and was comfortably saved.

Banbury were struggling to create opportunities but in the 30th minute at least showed promise when a Conor McDonagh low cross in from the right was gathered by Ian Brown at the second attempt just ahead of the incoming Jack Self.

But Biggleswade always looked the more likely to make the breakthrough and they duly did so in the 32nd minute when a corner from the left led to an almighty scramble with Gavin Hoyte getting the final touch to knock the ball home.

Though Banbury had been second best for the first half hour they did respond positively to going behind. In the 35th minute a good run through the middle by Zac McEachran and he passed through to Ricky Johnson down the right inside the Biggleswade penalty area but the United striker’s shot from a narrow angle went just wide of the near post.

Three minutes later and a Jack Self cross from the left was headed on by Luke Carnell to Andy Gunn 12 yards out but the United central defender didn’t connect properly with his shot and the effort was comfortably saved.

However, three minutes before half time and United were level when a free-kick taken by Marvin Martin from the right was only cleared out as far as Jack Self 15 yards out whose shot took a deflection off a defender before hitting the back of the net.

Banbury were much improved at the start of the second half and dominated the play. In the 54th minute McEachran fed the ball through to McDonagh on the edge of the Biggleswade penalty area and he brought out an excellent save from Brown low down to his right to tip the ball away at the expense of a corner.

Banbury would continue to have much the better of the game as the half developed but despite this they were unable to find a way through and struggled to create clear chances. As the half drew to its conclusion the home side came more into the game.
Then in the second minute of stoppage time a cross in from the right by-line by Hoenes saw Robbie Parker head the ball home from six yards to earn Biggleswade all three points.

To have lost the game was rather harsh on Banbury but as they say “that’s football”
