There was one change from Saturday with Ravi Shamsi coming in for the unavailable Sam Humphreys

Whilst the first fifteen minutes of the game were fairly equal in terms of possession, it was Banbury who showed more promise going forward. In the fifth minute Jefferson Louis set up Ravi Shamsi whose shot from 25 yards went over the bar. In the 13th minute a Louis long range effort failed to trouble former Banbury goalkeeper Hafeed Al Droubi. A minute later an excellent run in from the left by Tom Winters saw the Banbury winger’s shot saved by the legs of the Chesham custodian.

Banbury were now starting to dominate the proceedings. In the 19th minute a superb cross field pass from Shamsi put Winters through down the left but the shot from the edge of the home penalty saw Al Droubi do well to knock the ball away for a corner. Seven minutes later a cross from the right by Conor McDonagh was headed just inches over the bar by Ricky Johnson from eight yards

But United would take a deserved lead in the 34th minute when a cross in from the right was headed away poorly by a Chesham defender into the path of Winters coming in at the far post who fired the ball home into the bottom corner of the net.

Chesham improved in the last ten minutes of the half but the score remained 1-0 at the interval.

Banbury looked for the second goal early in the second half and it looked like coming and it duly did so in the 59th minute when a corner from the right was cleared back to the taker Winters who put the ball back into the centre and it was another poor defensive clearing header with the ball falling to McDonagh who struck the ball home low into the net.

Two minutes later though and Chesham were right back in the game when a low corner from the left led to a scramble in the six yard box with Shane Bush then knocking the ball home.

Banbury were now put under pressure as Chesham pushed forward for the equaliser but they could have restored their two goal lead in the 69th minute when Shamsi went on a run from deep on the right, his shot being well saved by Al Droubi at his near post.

Chesham, not surprisingly, pushed forward in the last ten minutes and Banbury could have put the game beyond doubt when in the 87th minute Louis put Howards through but the goalkeeper again came to the home side’s rescue with an excellent save.

Just two minutes later though and it was 3-1 when Matt Peake-Pijnen slipped the ball through to Louis on the edge of the Chesham penalty area who stroked the ball home.

Overall, it was a fully deserved win for Banbury who have a maximum six points from two games and though it is early days sit proudly on top of the table.
