United come back from a goal down to book their place in the Second Round of the Birmingham Senior Cup with goals from Leam Howards and Zac McEachran

There was a first minute chance for United's Darius Browne which was not taken but after this the half soon developed into the home side having the better of the game and looking the much more likelier of the sides to open the scoring.

Opportunities that there were came the way of Coventry Sphinx but they failed to find the back of the net with the closest they came being in the 32nd minute when Lewis McBride let fly from just inside the Banbury penalty area with the ball going just inches over the bar.

United were rather fortunate to still be on level terms at the break and it was no surprise when they went behind five minutes into the second half. A corner from the right was headed home by Lewis Rankin.

Banbury hardly looked like equalising and it was rather against the run of play that they did so in the 69th minute when Ricky Johnson headed the ball on from midway inside the Sphinx half to Zac McEachran down the right who took the ball forward before crossing low into the centre where the incoming Leam Howards at the far post knocked the ball home.

A minute later Howards hit the post with a shot from the edge of the penalty area but United would not though have to wait long to increase their lead as two minutes later a quick fee-kick caught out the home side with Johnson setting Zac McEachran through on goal down the right who then shot across the goalkeeper into the far corner of the net from 12 yards.

Sphinx piled on the pressure in the final ten minutes looking for the equaliser but some good goalkeeping from Jack Harding, some shots going just wide and some wayward finishing combined to keep the score at 2-1.

Coventry Sphinx will consider themselves most unfortunate not to have won this game but credit to Banbury for hanging in there and it is goals that win games and United conjured up two very good ones to take them into the draw for the Second Round.

With First Round matches not scheduled to be completed until early November one would not expect the draw for the Second Round to be made until then.

Banbury United: Jack Harding, Callum White, Bradley Partner, Duran Martin, Bradley Cox, Andy Gunn, Jacob Blackstock (Leam Howards 51), Ollie Stanbridge, Darius Browne (Charlie Wise 86), Zac McEachran, Nicholas Kalakoutis (Ricky Johnson 51). Sub (not used): Jon Steedman.
