The first half hour of the game developed into a competitive but equal game but there were no decent chances to seriously trouble either custodian.

Banbury did have the ball in the back of the net in the 30th minute when a free kick from Tom Winters from halfway inside the Farnborough half down the left was put to the far post where Luke Carnell rose to head the ball forward with Ricky Johnson heading the ball into the back of the net in the centre from the edge of the six yard box but the referee ruled the goal out for an infringement on a home defender by Johnson.

Banbury had the better of the last 15 minutes of the half. In the 38th minute a 20 yard shot from Winters took a slight deflection but not enough to trouble the home custodian and it was collected comfortably though in the final minute of the half Farnborough went close when a shot from the edge of the Banbury penalty area by Dan Walker down the left went just wide of the far post.

Banbury would go very close to taking the lead just two minutes into the second half when Leam Howards turned sharply on the edge of the penalty area but his shot thundered against the bottom of the post and came out. A minute later and a cross from the edge of the penalty area down the right by Hawtin saw a mass of players going in at the far post with Ricky Johnson's header bouncing up over the crossbar.

Banbury had made an excellent start to the second half but in the 57th minute Farnborough would take the lead when a free kick from wide on the right went through to Keith Emmerson on the edge of the Banbury penalty area down the left whose shot flew back across the goalmouth into the far corner of the net.

Banbury took a while to recover from conceding and Farnborough had the better of the next period of the game but Banbury were soon back on top. In the 68th minute a Charlie Hawtin shot from 25 yards was punched away by Patrick O'Flaherty in the Farnborough goal as Banbury began to put pressure on the home side in search of the equaliser.

In the 76th minute a cross from the left by Jordy Ngathe saw Johnson's header at the far post go back over the home custodian but then hit the crossbar and go over.

Banbury continued to pile on the pressure in the last 10 minutes of the game but it just wouldn't fall for Banbury and Farnborough held out for the 1-0 win.

Though credit must go to Farnborough for defending well this is a game that Banbury certainly did not deserve to lose but that's the football for you!
