As the 2017/18 season winds down and everyone starts to look forward to a well-earned bit of rest and relaxation, coaches involved in bringing through the next generation of Banbury United footballers were treated to an interesting, thought provoking, coach development event with first team manager Mike Ford on Wednesday evening.

Mike started the evening with a discussion around the structuring of a coaching session, reflecting on his background as a coach and coach educator, and giving lots of useful tips and ideas.

Out on the pitch, working with players from the club’s junior teams, Mike got the players started with a warm-up exercise before moving into a “whole-part-whole” session with assembled coaches observing the players on different topics during the initial game to then suggest ideas for the focus of the “part” activity.

Throughout the evening Mike continued to share ideas with both the players and the coaches with discussion ranging from using “arrival activities”, to get the players learning straight away while you set-up your session, to different options for where to position yourself during sessions to get the best picture of what the players are doing/seeing.

The coaching session ended with a quick review/feedback discussion where what came out strongly from the players was how much they enjoy learning when they are engaged in game-related activities.

For the coaches it was a resounding thank-you to Mike and please can we do this sort of stuff more often, which puts the future of all our young players in a good place as we continue to improve and move forward as individuals, teams, and club.
