United hit for five at Top Field

United suffered their seventh consecutive league defeat, the latest coming at Hitchin on Saturday

It was another afternoon of suffering for the surprisingly healthy number of Puritan supporters who made their way to Top Field Hitchin by coach, car and rail for this Southern League Premier Division encounter.

The game was effectively all over as a contest after twenty minutes with Hitchin tearing Banbury apart and scoring three goals in that time. Callum Donnelly put the Canaries ahead after just two minutes with a deflected shot past Kwame Fordah in the Banbury goal. Mitchell Bryant made it 2-0 after 11 minutes after being put through and shooting home from the edge of the penalty area. Matt Lench got the third on 19 minutes after being set up by Donnelly.

Hitchin were dominant and a long range effort from Donnelly struck the Banbury crossbar and Bryant fired into the side netting before Banbury finally mount a decent attack on 28 minutes with Adeyinka Talabi’s shot from the edge of the area being tipped by Hitchin goalkeeper Tahj Bell onto the crossbar and over for a corner.

Seven minutes into the second half and Simon Martin headed home a Donnelly corner to make it 4-0.

On 67 minutes Banbury’s best move of the half saw Conor Collins burst into the Hitchin penalty area before unleashing a shot which brought out a good save from Bell.

Hitchin completed the scoring in stoppage time when Michael King ran through and stroked the ball past Fordah to make the final score 5-0.

The last time United lost seven consecutive league games was back in November and December 1989, the season they were relegated out of the Southern League. Due to Hinckley United’s demise only three clubs are to be relegated this season and though United, thanks to points gained earlier in the season and the records of AFC Totton, Bedford Town and Bashley, appear safe from occupying a bottom three place, it is looking increasingly likely, on current form, that a fourth from bottom position is now a realistic outcome to the end of the season, United currently sit just two points above fourth from bottom Chippenham Town.
