United's play-off hopes disappear as Leamington gain a deserved win

Manager Mike Ford opted to start Ricky Johnson at the back and play Manny Duku and Conor McDonagh up front with Tom Winters having to be satisfied with a place on the bench.

Leamington would start the better of the two sides and in the 14th minute they had an excellent chance to take the lead but Stefan Moore hit the underside of the crossbar from the edge of the six yard box down the right, the ball coming down and bouncing just in front of the goal line before being hacked clear.

On 20 minutes, Leamington would take the lead when a free-kick from the right was put into the penalty area and not cleared with Jamie Hood the hooking the ball home from six yards.

Leamington would continue to control proceedings as the half developed further. On 27 minutes Jack Harding did well to tip a free-kick from a central position around the post for a corner. Six minutes later an Ahmed Obeng run down the left saw him shoot just wide.

It was only in the last five minutes of the half that Banbury began to ask questions of Leamington. Following a period of pressure, a Luke Carnell cross from the left was only cleared out as far as Sam Humphreys just outside the home penalty area but his lofted shot over Tony Breeden went over the bar.

However, Banbury failed to build on their improvement at the end of the first half and Leamington came out for the second period well in control of the game again. On 53 minutes a cross from the left saw Jack Edwards head the ball just wide at the far post.

The rest of the half was until late stoppage time the proverbial non-event with United offering very little going forward and Leamington comfortably in control of the game.
In stoppage time a corner from the left taken by Tom Winters saw Luke Carnell get his head to the ball first in a packed penalty area, the ball hitting the ground and bouncing up and skimming the top of the crossbar before going over.

But this was too little too late and it was a very disappointing performance from Banbury and they will thus be playing in the Southern League Premier Division again next season.
