The Banbury Plant Hire Community Stadium sees United entertain Merthyr Town tomorrow evening (Tuesday) 7.45pm kick-off

Merthyr Town make the long journey for a midweek game to the Banbury Plant Hire Community Stadium tomorrow evening (Tuesday) for a Southern League Premier Division game kick-off at 7.45pm.

This is the first time that we will have met Merthyr Town in any competition, though of course we were regular opponents of the now defunct Merthyr Tydfil. In fact, despite the distance between the two towns, Merthyr Tydfil are the side that we have played more than any other during our two spells in the Southern League, a total of 27 seasons!

It is no surprise that Merthyr Town, formed in the summer of 2010 from the ashes of the Merthyr Tydfil club, have climbed rapidly through two divisions of the Western League and the South & West Division of the Southern League to reach the Southern League Premier Division for the start of last season. They finished a creditable 10th last season and have made a good start this time around, sitting currently in 7th place, just a point behind ourselves but with a game in hand.

One remarkable fact, and I do not know if there is a specific connection reason, but three of the Merthyr squad, Curtis McDonald, Kyle Patten and Jon Brown have at some time played for our local rivals Brackley Town!

As for ourselves the three points gained on Saturday in a 3-0 home win over Kings Langley moved us up to fifth place and though even with three points we cannot move any higher the game presents an opportunity to consolidate that fifth place position. Andy Gunn is available again after completing his one match suspension on Saturday.

A reminder to supporters that, as usual, the small bar will not be available before the game or at half-time as it is required for sponsors and guests. It will be open to all after the game.

Tomorrow’s match is sponsored by Michael Jones Jeweller

Supporters should note that the old Chiltern Railways Car Park on the Tramway Industrial Estate is still available for parking free of charge. This will provide a quick getaway after the game, avoiding the problems of getting out of Station Approach and help ease possible parking congestion at the ground. Entrance is via Swan Close Road and car park is at the bottom on the right, it is free to park there, thanks to Chiltern Railways. Post Code for the Chiltern Railways Car Park is OX16 5TB. Turn right out of car park, through the bollards and turn right down Station Approach – ground is 300 yards on the right.
