The first thirty minutes of the game saw a competitive affair though neither side created any opportunities of any note with both defences playing well and snuffing out any danger.

However in the 34th minute a good run by Carl Brown saw him brought down just outside the penalty area in a central position and Tom Winters stepped up to take the free-kick right into the corner of the net to give Banbury the lead.

The next three minutes saw Jack McKnight bring out two decent saves from the home custodian but there were no further goals before the interval.

With a number of established players coming on for the second half, United would go on to dominate the second period.

Three minutes into this period and United doubled their advantage when a shot from a narrow angle on the left by Ravi Shamsi smashed against the post, the ball rebounded out at pace to the incoming Sam Humphreys who made no mistake knocking the ball into the back of the net.

Just two minutes later and it was 3-0 when a Tom Winters corner from the right was headed home from the edge of the six yard box by McKnight.

United continued to dominate and it became 4-0 in the 57th minute when a low cross in from the left by Tom Winters was turned into his own net by Brad Harris.

The scoring was completed in the 74th minute when Humphreys got his second goal, having been put through on goal with just the Rugby goalkeeper to beat he neatly lifted the ball over the advancing custodian into the back of the net from 15 yards.

It was a most impressive second half performance from United, and a very promising 45 minutes for 19 year-old attacking midfielder Ravi Shamsi, a former scholar and U18 player with Fulham, who caused all sorts of problems for the home defence with his forward runs
