Tomorrow (Tuesday) United entertain Stourbridge in a Southern League Premier Central Division game 7.45pm kick-off

Though we have not met Stourbridge since season 2013/14, the Glassboys have been frequent visitors to Banbury in our over 85-year history. In fact, they are the side we have met in league action more than any other, this being the 42nd season of league games between the sides, the sides first meeting being in the Birmingham League back in season 1945/46.

Stourbridge, after a long association with the Southern League, have spent the last four seasons in the Northern Premier League but were transferred back to the Southern for this season. They went close to earning a place in what is now National League North at the end of season 2016/17 but after qualifying for the play-offs they were beaten in the play-off final 1-0 by Spennymoor Town. Gary Hackett has been manager at Stourbridge since 2003, a remarkable achievement in these days of rapid managerial turnovers even at non-league level.

Stourbridge have had a very good first half to the season, currently second in the table, level on points with leaders Kettering Town, albeit they have played two games more than the Poppies. They do though sit a massive ten points above third place Biggleswade Town, suggesting the league title could well become the proverbial “two horse race” this season! Stourbridge arrive at the Banbury Plant Hire Community Stadium tomorrow in good form, having won their last three league games, including an impressive 3-0 win at Leiston on Saturday.

As for ourselves, the 3-3 draw at Needham Market on Saturday extended our unbeaten run to five games and so confidence should be high going into a difficult two games in five days, for after the Stourbridge game tomorrow current league leaders Kettering Town are next at the Banbury Plant Hire Community Stadium on Saturday.

The least said about United’s more recent league games against Stourbridge the better though!! Stourbridge have won the last four games, scoring 19 goals and conceding just one!! Mind you that was a few seasons ago and the club was not in the best of health at that time!
