United take a two goal lead but the home side fight back to take a share of the spoils

Manager Mike Ford opted for the same side as had won at Kings Langley on Saturday.

Weymouth started promisingly and in the third minute a fierce shot from Chris Shephard from distance fortunately for Banbury went straight at goalkeeper Jack Harding. Six minutes later Jack Westbrook was robbed just inside his own half by Jordan Copp who took the ball to the edge of the Banbury penalty area but his shot was comfortably saved.

Banbury though worked their way into the game and it became a much more even affair. In the 23rd minute Callum White passed the ball down the right to Zac McEachran who crossed from inside the penalty area through to the incoming Conor McDonagh at the far post with the Banbury striker hitting the near post with the ball coming out and being cleared.

However, just two minutes later and Banbury were in front when McEachran found McDonagh in a central position on the edge of the Weymouth penalty area and he shook off a challenge and did well to make room for a shot into the bottom corner of the net.

In the 37th minute, United doubled their lead when good play by McEachran led to McDonagh shooting from the edge of the Weymouth area and though his effort was blocked the loose ball fell to Jack Self who fired the ball home from 15 yards.

Weymouth though would pull a goal back a minute before the interval when a corner from the right was played low to Stuart Fleetwood on the nearside edge of the penalty area who then struck the ball across the goal into the far corner of the net.

Weymouth had the better of the early stages of the second half but Banbury defended well as the home side pushed forward in search of the equaliser.

Banbury still looked dangerous going forward and went close in the 62nd minute when Callum White’s shot from a narrow angle on the right was knocked away by goalkeeper Tom McHales’s legs at the near post.

Five minutes later a free-kick by Calvin Brooks from a dangerous central position just outside the Banbury penalty area was put over the wall but comfortably saved by Harding.

As the mid-point of the half approached, Weymouth began to dominate the game and put Banbury under heavy pressure. Banbury were very much having to dig in and defend.

However, on 83 minutes the equaliser which looked like coming duly did so when Banbury failed to clear the ball from deep inside their penalty area and substitute Aaron Rodriguez struck the ball home from close range.

The final seven minutes of normal time and three minutes of stoppage time was hectic with Weymouth now looking for a winner and Banbury themselves looking just as likely to score as the home side but with neither side making a further breakthrough it ended 2-2.

A thoroughly entertaining game and though Banbury will be disappointed not to have won after leading 2-0, overall it was a fair result.
