Banbury United Under 18's v Rushden and Diamonds Under 18's Strive

Match Report

Banbury Under 18's secured their first league win since early December with a convincing 8 - 2 victory over Rushden and Diamonds Under 18's Strive. In extremely "windy" conditions making life difficult for both teams it was Banbury who settled into the game more quickly and they took the lead inside ten minutes when Josh Wynne got on the end of a Ali Candler free kick to put it past the "keeper". A second goal was not long in coming and it was Josh Wynne again who used his strength to hold off a defender and fire home. Rushden pulled one back, but Banbury restored their advantage soon after with a neat piece of individual skill from Will Dee created space for him to shoot and put Banbury 3 - 1 up. There was a superb individual goal from Dan Lydon when he went on a run passing a few challenges before scoring with a left foot shot into the net to make it 4 - 1. Rushden pulled another one back before half time so 4 -2 at the break. The second half saw Banbury continue to control possession and they added a fifth goal when a good run down the left by Dan Lydon resulted in him crossing to Josh Wynne who turned and struck a firm shot into the net and complete his hat trick. It was 6 - 2 soon after when Will Dee scored his second with a powerful shot from just inside the area which gave the keeper no chance. Josh Wynne scored his fourth when he managed to get his head onto the ball from a corner and the bounce deceived the defender and it went in. I t should have been eight late on when Jack Randall, playing in a unfamiliar role up front, made a good run, but just couldn't connect with the cross. However, it was not long before it was eight, when Harry Dunham scored after shrugging off a defender and the advancing Rushden keeper could not hold on to the ball and Harry reacted quickly to make it 8 -2 and round off a fine win for the Under 18's. A final note, a big thank you to our groundsman Andy Mayo who stepped in at the last minute to Referee the game as the league were unable to provide one on this occasion.
