Banbury United 2 Mangotsfield United 1
Banbury gain a narrow win in final pre-season game
Banbury would have the better of the first half hour of this game, there were a couple of on shot target shots from both Ravi Shamsi and Jefferson Louis though the visiting goalkeeper was not unduly troubled. Just before the half hour mark Louis, through on goal appeared at least to Banbury supporters to have been brought down inside the penalty area, but the referee saw it differently and waved played on. However, on 31 minutes Banbury would take the lead when a defensive howler saw Jefferson Louis intercept a poor back pass just outside the Mangotsfield penalty area before slotting the ball past goalkeeper Ashley Newman.
Three minutes later and a cross from the left by Tom Winters was met by Louis at the six yard line but stretching his header went over the bar. However, just two minutes later and it was 2-0 when Matt Peake-Pijnen took the ball in from the left before passing through to Shamsi who struck a glorious shot from a central position 15 yards out into the bottom corner of the net.
Right on half time Mangotsfield should have reduced the deficit when Jack Westbrook was adjudged to have bundled over James Fisher just inside the penalty area down the right but Jack Harding made an excellent save diving to his left to knock away Lewis Hogg's penalty.
Though Banbury's Sam Humphreys was denied by the woodwork early in the second half, Mangotsfield were much better in this period and on 77 minutes got a deserved goal from a superb 25 yard strike from Darren Edwards.
Banbury would go close in the latter stages to restoring their two goal lead when a cross from the left by Winters struck the top of the Mangotsfield cross bar.
