Swindon Supermarine 0 Banbury United 3
United’s pre-season campaign continued with a 3-0 win at Swindon Supermarine
It was rather an uneventful, albeit fairly equal, first twenty-five minutes but it would be Banbury who would make the breakthrough in the 26th minute following a foul on Ravi Shamsi on the edge of the penalty area down the right. Tom Winters stepped up to strike the free-kick into the bottom far corner of the net.
Three minutes later and good play between Conor McDonagh and Sam Humphreys down the right ended with the latter nicking the ball over Johns from inside the penalty area but the ball went just wide of the far post.
With Banbury having much the better of the game they had the ball in the back of the Swindon net on 38 minutes when a cross from the right by Jack Westbrook was knocked in at the far post by Ravi Shamsi but he assistant referee raised his flag for off-side.
Banbury would dominate the opening ten minutes of the second half, scoring two goals. Firstly in the 48th minute a free-kick by Matt Peake-Pijnen from the right was headed home by Luke Carnell at the six yard line. Then in the 54th minute a low cross in from the left by Leam Howards was collected by Conor McDonagh eight yards out who neatly side-stepped a Swindon defender before firing the ball past Johns.
Just after the hour mark a neat pass from Damien Robertson to Leam Howards saw the United striker denied from six yards out by an excellent save from the home custodian.
It was rather comfortable for Banbury for the rest of the game but the nearest they came to increasing their lead was a 77th minute shot from the right hand edge of the penalty area by Robertson which drifted just wide of the far post.
It is now five wins out of five in United’s pre-season campaign with home games against Kidlington on Tuesday and against Mangotsfield United next Saturday to come before the season proper starts in two weeks time.
