Banbury United 0 Basingstoke Town 1

A superb free-kick by Nana Owusu six minutes into the second half gave Basingstoke a deserved three points

The visitors had much the better of the first half. Both sides tried to play their passing game but Basingstoke were better at it, keeping the ball for long periods.

In the 15th minute Basingstoke went very close to taking the lead when a corner from the right taken by Sam Deadfield led to a scramble in the six yard box with the ball eventually popping up nicely for the incoming Charlie Kennedy at close range but with the goal seemingly at his mercy his header lacked the necessary direction and hit te outside of the post before being cleared.

With Basingstoke dominating the possession there were few chances for Banbury in the half. The home side's best move of the half saw James Smith send Conor McDonagh away down the right who then took the ball inside and though then forced wide by David Ray, the United striker made room to shoot for the far bottom corner from a narrow angle on the edge of the six yard box but Alex Tokarczyk in the Basingstoke goal was able to push the ball away and out for a throw in over the other side.

Six minutes into the second half and Basingstoke got the breakthrough that their play had deserved. Initially the referee awarded a penalty to Basingstoke when George Nash bundled over Aaron Jarvis five yards inside the penalty area but after consultation with the assistant referee it was ruled Jarvis had been off-side so the referee took the play back to an earlier infringement by Andy Gunn on Deadfield just outside the penalty area on the left hand side. Nana Owusu stepped up to take the free-kick and hit a glorious strike into the top far corner of the net to put the Hampshire side ahead.

Having gone behind, Banbury at least responded by creating a couple of opportunities. In the 57th minute a corner from the right taken by Mark Bell saw Luke Carnell get up above the Basingstoke defence eight yards out but Tokarczyk gathered the central defender's header low down. Ten minutes from time another corner from the right by Bell this time fell to Jack Self 12 yards out whose shot was well blocked by a defender with the ball then coming out to Sam Humphreys on the edge of the penalty area, his shot blocked just in front of the goal-line by a combination of a defender and goalkeeper with the custodian then picking up the loose ball.

Overall though the visitors were good value for their win.
