Banbury United 1 Chesham United 0
A 68th minute goal from Callum White earns United a deserved three points against Chesham.
Chesham started the better of the two sides but Banbury soon worked their way into the game and from around the ten minute mark began to have the better of proceedings.
In the 16th minute a corner from the right taken by Tom Winters was cleared straight back out to him and he put the ball on to the far edge of the six yard box where a scramble ensued with Ricky Johnson managing to get a final touch but stabbing the ball over the bar from close range.
Six minutes later Johnson put Zac McEachran through on goal inside the Chesham penalty area down the right but Richard Hayward in the Chesham goal was alert enough to come out smartly to narrow the angle and smother the United player's shot down by his feet.
In the 40th minute a Conor McDonagh shot from the edge of the Chesham penalty area down the left was deflected over the bar by Adam Martin at the six yard line for a corner.
But it was Chesham who finished the half on top with Harding having to make a decent save when a shot from Dave Pearce from 20 yards took a deflection off Jack Westbrook with Harding having to adjust direction and dive low to his left to tip the ball away for a corner. The from the resultant corner from the right the ball fell to Drew Roberts at the far post but he shot just wide from 12 yards.
Banbury were much improved at the start of the second half. In just the second minute a cross from the left by Tom Bradbury was headed just over at the near post by Johnson. Just before the hour mark Banbury were so close to opening the scoring when a good run down the left by Winters saw him then cross the ball deep to the far post where the incoming McDonagh was unfortunate to see his header smash against the post before the ball was scrambled away.
Banbury continued to dominate and put Chesham under much pressure. Just after the hour mark a cross field pass from Winters on the left to McEachran down the right saw the United player let fly from just inside the visitor's penalty area down the right with Hayward getting his fingertips to the shot and deflecting it just a few feet over the bar.
In the 65th minute a corner from the right taken by Winters saw Luke Carnell get his head to the ball first in a mass of players at the six yard line but the ball went just over the bar.
But the goal that had looked like coming for some time duly did so in the 68th minute when a superb pass from McEachran sent the overlapping Callum White away down the right who then turned inside before hitting a left foot shot from 12 yards past the visiting custodian into the back of the net.
The last quarter of an hour of the game saw a Tom Winters shot from 30 yards go just wide and substitute Manny Duku caused problems when he came on, having a couple of good chances that were not taken. At the other end, though Chesham huffed and puffed, Jack Harding in the Banbury goal was not called upon to make any saves of note.
Overall a deserved win for Banbury and a most impressive second half performance which keeps alive their hopes of sneaking into a play-off place.
