Basingstoke Town 3 Banbury United 1
Banbury were beaten by two late goals at the Camrose
Banbury got off to the worst of starts, going behind in just the fifth minute when a cross in from the right by Sam Smart was not held by Jack Harding and Sam Argent was on hand to knock the ball home from close range.
Banbury responded well to going behind though. Two minutes later a Tom Winters shot from the edge of the Basingstoke penalty area down the left whistled just past the far post. Then in the 11th minute a Winters free kick in a central position 25 yards was put into the home penalty area, the ball falling to Luke Carnell who shot over the bar from 12 yards.
Though Banbury would have the better of the next period, Basingstoke worked their way back into the game and had a good spell on the half hour mark. In the 35th minute a Ben Wright free kick from the edge of the Banbury penalty area was very well saved by Jack Harding to knock the ball away down by the post for a corner.
Though Basingstoke controlled the rest of the first half, Banbury would conjure up an equaliser right on half-time when a Harding long-kick out fell to Winters who let fly with an excellent shot from 25 yards, the ball sailing over Colin McAdden in the Basingstoke goal to bring the scores level at the break.
The second half until the last quarter of an hour was rather uneventful. In the 55th minute Charlie Hawtin appeared to have his legs taken from under him inside the Basingstoke penalty area down the right but much to the surprise of the large Puritan contingent the referee thought otherwise.
The game looked as though it might just peter out into a stalemate but in the 76th minute a low cross in from the right was tapped in at the far post by substitute Ashleigh Artwell who had remarkably only been on the field a few seconds.
Banbury struggled to make much impression in the final 15 minutes their best effort was a 20 yard effort from George Nash which flew a few feet over the bar but with them pushing forward, they were caught out three minutes into stoppage time when a low cross in from the right by Smart was slotted home from close range by Argent to make the final score 3-1.
Overall there was little between the sides but things are certainly not going United’s way at the moment and the five game winning run at the start of the season is now seeming rather a long time ago!
