A much changed United side worked hard to gain a deserved point against Kettering at the Banbury Plant Hire Community Stadium.
Banbury began this game much the better of the two sides. IIn the second minute a cross from the left by Tom Winters was chested down by Jefferson Louis into the path of Elliot Sandy whose shot from the edge of the Kettering penalty area saw Paul White in the Kettering goal do well to tip the ball over the bar for a corner.
Sixty seconds later and a corner from the left taken by Winters saw Sandy’s glancing header at the near post go wide of the far post.
Banbury would go even closer to scoring in the 18th minute when a Winters corner from the right was headed back into the centre at the far post by Tom Bradbury with Ricky Johnson’s header from the edge of the six yard box being clawed away by White and though the ball only went as far as the lurking Louis the United striker’s shot was then headed off the line by Liam Bateman.
Having had the better of the first twenty minutes it was thus rather against the run of play when in the 21st minute a free-kick from five yards inside their own half taken by Kettering goalkeeper Paul White caused problems in the heart of the Banbury penalty area with Lindon Meikle firing the ball home from close range.
Having scored Kettering were much improved with Banbury now struggling to create the openings that they had earlier in the half.
In the 38th minute Kettering could have increased their lead when a free-kick a few yards inside the Banbury half in a central position taken by Ben Toseland was put into the Banbury penalty area where it caused problems and led to a scramble though Gary Mulligan’s final shot was well blocked by Jack Finch.
Banbury kept plugging away in the second half and though not creating clear chances got their deserved reward for their efforts on 77 minutes when after Darren Pond had been fouled by Michael Richens a yard inside the Kettering penalty area, Jefferson Louis stepped up to competently convert the spot-kick.
Kettering put Banbury under some pressure in the final few minutes of the game but the home side held on for a point.
