United hit eight to guarantee runners-up spot in the Thames Valley Counties League Division 2 North
The comfortable 8-0 away win against Milton Keynes City Reserves guarantees United’s Women’s side runners up spot in the Thames Valley Counties League Division 2 North. Realistically they have little chance of finishing ahead of league leaders Buckingham Athletic Ladies but will be hoping that the runners-up spot will be enough when the teams are allocated to divisions this summer that they will be playing Division One football next season.
Banbury were soon having the better of the game at Tattenhoe Lane in Milton Keynes this afternoon but missed some early chances before taking the lead in the 18th minute when a fine strike from Rochelle Buick from 15 yards flew into the top corner of the net.
Five minutes later and it was 2-0 through Alex Ayckbourn, the home custodian somehow letting what was an easy pick up through her into the back of the net.
In the 25th minute a Debbie Andrews shot hit the post and the same player was denied a goal four minutes later when the home goalkeeper made up for her earlier mistake with a fine save.
On the half hour it became 3-0 when Emily Parker, who had only been on the field for just over 60 seconds as a substitute, was put through on goal and competently stroked the ball into the net past an exposed home goalkeeper from 12 yards.
In the 38th minute a cross from the left by Ayckbourn was put into her own net by a Milton Keynes defender to make it 4-0.
The last minute of the half saw a cross from the left by Leah Kinch fall to Jenny Hoggins whose shot looked bound for the top corner of the net but the home custodian made a fantastic save diving to tip the ball away.
Five minutes into the second half and the fifth goal arrived when a cross from the left by Yazmin Holmes was knocked home in the centre by Kinch and the same player would make it 6-0 eight minutes later when a cross from Holmes was not held by the goalkeeper and she was on hand to score from close range.
In the 62nd minute another cross from the left by Holmes saw Lynsey Burdock and the goalkeeper challenging one another for the ball with Burdock coming out on top and then slotting the ball home into an empty net.
Andrews would have the last word and deservedly get her name on the scoresheet when she struck the ball home from the edge of the penalty area in the 76th minute to make it 8-0.
