Banbury began the game brightly and were denied an opening goal as early as the fourth minute when a cross/shot from the right by Rose Clark sailed over the home goalkeeper’s head, only to hit the far post and come out. A few minutes later a fierce Debbie Andrews shot from 15 yards brought out a good save from the home custodian.

But, Banbury would make the breakthrough in the 17th minute when Josie Clark battled her way through from the edge of the Summertown penalty area to create an opening and then shooting low into the corner of the net from 12 yards

Just a minute later and some excellent build up play on the right ended with Andrews not quite able to keep her shot down from 12 yards, the ball going over the bar.

However, the all-important second goal would come on 27 minutes when a cross in from the right by Clark fell to Jenny Hoggins who blasted the ball into the top of the net from 12 yards. Just 60 seconds later and it was 3-0 when Andrews was tripped inside the Summertown penalty area down the right with United captain Sarah Rhind-O’Neil stepping up to competently convert the spot-kick.

It was three goals in the space of five minutes for United as the fourth would arrive in the 32nd minute and it was a remarkable strike from all of 35 yards by Emily Parker, the ball sailing high into the top of the net over a flabbergasted home goalkeeper. It is a shame this was not a home game, as this was some strike which would have been caught on video!

Parker came close to a second goal in the final five minutes of the half, firstly shooting just wide and then being denied by a good save from the Summertown goalkeeper.

The second half saw a lot of endeavour from both sides with the home side certainly not giving up after their four goal first half deficit. They probably deserved a goal for their efforts after the break and went close on a couple of occasions.

Banbury were not able to add to their first half tally but really ought to have added a fifth on 69 minutes when a short corner from Leah Kinch on the right to Clark saw her put the ball into the six yard box with Rhind-O’Neil from just under the crossbar being unable to curb here defensive instincts and managing to somehow head the ball over the bar which at the other end would have earned her the defensive clearance of the year! But with the score at 4-0 it didn’t of course matter and brought a smile to everyone on a fine November afternoon for football which surely is what this game is all about!

Photo shows Sarah Rhind-O’Neil being congratulated by Debbie Andrews (who was fouled for the penalty) after her successful penalty kick to make it 3-0 with Josie Clark also about to offer her congratulations.
