United looked to improve on recent performances and competed strongly against a good Goring side.
Goring scored from long range but not after United had a handful of their own long range efforts. Just before half time Michael Waterhouse saw his fierce shot excellently turned away by the keeper.
Early in the second half United were awarded a soft free kick, the resulting shot fell to Robert Pollard who shot into the bottom corner with the keeper wrong footed. An even game from start to finish was decided late in when the impressive visiting captain travelled at pace at the home defence, it looked like he had been forced wide but a strong shot was too good.
Tough not to get a deserved point but more importantly a far greater effort by all was comfort in defeat.
