v Didcot Town Red

In the end it was a comfortable victory at Easington Rec this morning as Banbury United under 11’s faced a tough test against Didcot Town Reds.

Banbury started off brightly with 2 quick corners in the first few minutes off the game causing early pressure which Didcot dealt with.
With 8 minutes on the clock Didcot went downfield for the first time and a neat turn bought a careless challenge to earn a penalty kick. The kick to the keeper’s right, was excellently read by Nathan Whyman who got across well to save and keep the score at 0-0.
Both teams continued to play well, Banbury created the better chances towards the end of the half, Filip Wójkic’s on target shot saved at the keepers feet and over the bar on 25mins for a Banbury corner. Further good work down the left was finally rewarded on 28mins from a throw in as Rowyn Moore turned and hit a well timed shot across goal, the keeper tried vainly but could only watch as the ball nestled into the far corner of the net to put Banbury 1 up as half time approached.

Didcot started the 2nd half well, however Banbury coped well with the pressure and began to assert themselves as the half wore on. Max Galloway put through on goal, the keeper saved well with his feet 40 minutes in. Eight minutes later Banbury were again creating pressure, a keeper error saw him catch the ball and take it out of play for a Banbury corner, Joseph Sparkes getting on the end of the resulting corner to put the boys 2-0 up.

The boys were playing with confidence and it really showed. Within 2 minutes Max put the ball in the net for a narrow offside to be called. Two minutes later an excellent ball across from Cole Relton was met by a weak punch from the keeper and Charlie Woods finished well for a 3 goal cushion.

Didcot kept on plugging away but on 54 minutes after good play involving Rowyn and Charlie, the ball fell to Liam Piggott who finished the move well for Banbury’s 4th.Didcot didn’t give up and applied pressure with a flurry of efforts, finally resulting in another penalty, this time slotted in the corner. On 58 minutes fine running down the left and a fantastic cross from Cole found Charlie for his 2nd and Banbury’s 5th. With a minute remaining Luke Penfold was very unlucky as his shot hit the post. A fine morning’s work from the boys; Banbury Utd 5 Didcot Town Reds 1
