Under 11s win the final

There was a big crowd at Easington Recreation Ground to see Banbury United under 11’s take on Abingdon Town under 11’s this morning.

Banbury made a dream start as Joseph Sparkes collected the ball in the middle of the park and sent a nice through ball to Max Galloway who crossed for Rowyn Moore to finish a fine move and put Banbury 1 up in the first minute of the game. This was by no means going to be an easy game for the top 2 teams in the league and so it proved as Abingdon came back into the game well. Banbury defended astutely, as did Abingdon until a mistake in the 23rd minute of the game let in an Abingdon player who finished to make it 1-1.
It continued to be a battle and the teams came in at half time all square.

The 2nd half started in the same manner as the 1st one had ended with few chances for either team. A good chance fell to Filip Wójkic in the 40th minute, his shot saved and the same player created an excellent chance 10 minutes later after a great run, his shot from the right beat the keeper and was narrowly wide of the left hand post.

Extra time was required and in the first period Charlie Woods can consider himself very unfortunate as he ran onto an excellent pass and finished exquisitely, only to be called back for offside! Abingdon went on to take the lead a few minutes later in very similar circumstances, this time given. To the boys credit they got on with it and made it 2-2 sixty seconds later, this time Filip was not to be denied a well deserved goal.

During the 2nd period there was no further addition to the scoreline and a penalty shootout was required to determine the winners. An excellent performance from Nathan Whyman in the Banbury goal ensured a 2 to nil victory in a best of 3 shootout.
