On a warm Spring early afternoon Abingdon Youth U11 played Banbury United U11 at Abingdon Town’s ground.
Both teams had played each other twice earlier in the season with honours even, 2 very well matched sides. Banbury had the better of the early exchanges, Liam Piggott with an early effort just wide of the goal a few minutes into the match. Both teams were well organised and chances at goal were few. Abingdon scored with their 1st attack as a cross from the byline was converted after 10 minutes. Banbury continued to create chances, Rowyn Moore had a long range shot saved on 15 minutes.
Banbury had 2 good chances within the space of a minute shortly before half time, Filip Wójkic with a decent chance saved and tipped wide from the Abingdon keeper and Cole Relton headed against the bar from the resulting corner kick. Charlie Woods had an on target shot saved on 29 minutes as Banbury chased a deserved equaliser.
Banbury continued to exert pressure on Abingdon as the 2nd half got underway, Filip had a chipped shot saved on 33 mins and finally found the breakthrough in the 36th minute as an excellent run and great through ball from Kai Source fell into the path of Max Galloway to dink the ball and wrong foot the keeper and make it 1-1.
Abingdon weathered the storm as the game evened out and despite Banbury’s best efforts to defend a corner kick the clearance fell to an Abingdon player to make it 2-1 in the 52nd minute. Two minutes later the lads can consider themselves very unlucky as what looked like a good equaliser was dubiously ruled offside!
The boys heads went down a little bit and towards the end Abingdon were able to add a 3rd from another corner kick.
