The game began well for Banbury as they took the lead from the penalty spot after just three minutes. Will Green turned sharply on the left hand side of 'Marine's penalty area and was brought down by Matt Robinson. Green himself took the spot-kick which was confidently struck into the net to the left of the goalkeeper to put Banbury ahead. It was thus Will Green who had the honour of scoring Banbury United's 2,000th Southern League goal in the club's history.
However, despite this early success, Banbury then failed to get a grip on the game and Swindon Supermarine had much the better of the rest of the half. They got a deserved equaliser on 23 minutes when Nick Stanley struck the ball home from the edge of the penalty area into the left hand corner of Andy Kemp's net.
Banbury had a couple of good chances in the second half. In the 74th minute a Glenn Walker cross from the left was nodded on by Green to Simeon Willams but his shot went wide of the post. Then in the 89th minute Green went on a run down the left and got in a good cross which found Ryan Howell running in but he got to far under the ball and it cleared the bar.
However, Swindon Supermarine throughout the second half had some even better chances than the home side but some poor finishing by the visitors meant that the game finished 1-1.
Certainly Banbury cannot claim they were hard done by, Swindon clearly deserved at least a point and they will probably go back to Wiltshire thinking thinking it was a missed opportunity not to have picked up all three!
