Banbury United 1 Weymouth 5

David Shadbolt8 Oct 2011 - 22:01

Banbury suffer heavy home defeat, with defensive lapses proving costly as Weymouth romp to a 5-1 win at the Spencer Stadium

Banbury put up a defensive horror show at the Spencer Stadium this afternoon, going down 5-1 to Weymouth.

Weymouth went ahead in the 20th minute when a cross from the left to the far post went over the head of goalkeeper Andy Kemp and the ball was then headed into an unguarded net by Craig Duff.

Banbury had their best spell of the first half around the half hour mark. On 29 minutes a shot from Aaron Woodley was deflected round the post for a corner and just two minutes later a Will Green effort was cleared away by a defender for a corner.

On 36 minutes Banbury equalised. A Ben Polk free kick from out on the right was pumped into the penalty area where Danny Edmond got his head to the ball and it fell to Glenn Walker who smashed it into the net from a narrow angle past Tom Manley.

After 40 minute Green got the ball into the back of the Weymouth net but the linesman had flagged for off-side.

However Banbury’s current defensive frailties would come to the fore just a minute after the disallowed Green effort when a cross from the right was headed back across goal from the far post and easily headed in by Duff for his second goal. It got worse for Banbury right on the stroke of half time when Sam Milsom struck the ball home from the right hand edge of the penalty area to make it 3-1 to the visitors at half time.

Banbury had a fair amount of the ball in the second half but that was of no concern to Weymouth as they contained the home side and never looked in danger of losing their grip on the game.

On 81 minutes the Weymouth forward line “waltzed” through the Banbury defence with Warren Byerley scoring his side’s fourth goal. In the last minute of the game a cross from the right was headed in at the back post by Byerley for his second goal with the Banbury defence by this time AWOL.
