The first half was very uneventful with United in particular not playing well, giving the ball away under pressure from a lively Marlow side who refused to allow United time to settle on the ball.
However, going forward United still on occasion looked dangerous and though there was little in the half in terms of general play they created the best two chances of the half. Firstly on 21 minutes a Mark Bell corner form the right was headed over the bar by Charlie Wise from six yards out and then in the 27th minute Bell beat Jamie Lofthouse-Smith on the left before whipping in a cross/shot which flew across the six yard box at height and though Ricky Johnson got his foot to the ball just four yards out stretching he put the ball over the bar.
Marlow had their best spell of the half in the last five minutes. Firstly a 20 yard shot from Kunle Otudeko was well held by Jack Harding in the Banbury goal and then a Marcus Mealing superb strike from 25 yards went just over.
Marlow started the second half the better of the two sides but it would be Banbury who would make the breakthrough in the 57th minute when a free kick from wide on the left taken by Bell was put into the visitor’s penalty area with the ball going through to Andy Gunn coming in round the back who headed the ball home from close range at the far post.
However, just four minutes later and Marlow equalised when a cross from the left by Richie Whittingham was not well defended and the ball went through to Chris Ovenden who knocked the ball home past Harding from close range.
Banbury, without looking particularly convincing, would regain the lead in the 77th minute. And a goal of quality it was with great build up play down the right involving Callum White, Bell and Zac McEachran before White unleashed a superb shot from the right hand edge of the penalty area about 15 yards out which flew into the far corner of the net giving Simon Grant in the Marlow goal no chance.
A minute into stoppage time and Marlow went close to equalising for the second time when a corner from the left taken by Jordace Holder-Spooner went through to Ovenden on the far side of the six yard box but his ball back into the centre of the six yard box was then hooked over the bar from just four yards out by Mealing
60 seconds later, with Marlow now leaving plenty of space at the back, Banbury should have scored a third. Bell passed across from the right to Darius Browne who was all alone in the centre and had just the goalkeeper to beat but he seemed to have too much time to make his mind up what to do and the custodian came out and managed to knock the ball away with his legs at the 12 yard mark
Marlow will feel that they deserved to have got something out of this game and they have a strong case but the results at the moment keep coming for United even when they are not at their best. United are now unbeaten in their last eight league games and have won six of them, a run which sees them up to fourth place in the table.
