Banbury United 3 Grendon Rangers 1

David Shadbolt24 Sep 2013 - 21:13

Match abandoned after 84 minutes due to fog with United leading 3-1.

Banbury made hard work of getting the upper hand over a side playing at four levels lower than themselves in the football pyramid despite taking the lead as early as the third minute when Scott Bridges converted a penalty kick after Juliano Menezes had been brought down.

Though Banbury had much more of the game than the visitors as the half developed, Grendon would equalise on 19 minutes when a good move down the right ended with a low cross into the centre which was struck home by James Gardner from 10 yards.

Though Banbury continued to have much the better of the game, Grendon defended well. Banbury should certainly have scored in the last minute of the half as Menezes had a glorious chance but managed to strike the ball high over the bar from five yards when it looked easier to score.

United would have to wait until the 68th minute to re-take the lead when Aaron Morgan struck a low drive into the bottom corner of the net from the edge of the penalty area.

With Grendon seemingly now tiring, the game would be sealed in the 73rd minute when Ashley Dumbleton was put through and found the space and time to strike the ball home from 8 yards.

It was now comfortable for Banbury, Dumbleton hitting the post three minutes after scoring.

However with seven minutes to go the fog which had been threatening on and off all evening came down thick all of a sudden. After a delay of 10 minutes the referee abandoned the game.

The club are hopeful that the Buckingham Charity Cup Council will rule that the score at the time of the abandonment should stand.
