In the second minute of the game, Gosport Borough’s Joseph Lea let fly from 20 yards, his shot going just over the bar. This was a promising opening for the visitor’s but would turn out to be the closest that they would come to scoring in the whole of the game.

Banbury would soon be having much the better of the game as the half settled down. In the 18th minute a Tom Bradbury cross from the left was headed back into the centre at the far post by Ricky Johnson into the path of Jack Self who hit his volley from ten yards out too well and the ball sailed well over the bar.

Banbury continued to dominate proceedings. In the 35th minute a Johnson shot from the edge of the Gosport area brought out a good save from visiting custodian Patrick O’Flaherty low down to his left. Three minutes later a Johnson glancing header from a Tom Winters free kick from the left went just wide of the far post.

But the goal that United’s dominance of the half deserved would arrive right on half time. The overlapping Bradbury down the left got in a cross from close to the by-line inside the penalty area but just as he did so he was brought down by Edward Sanders. Though the cross was headed into the net from close range by the incoming Johnson, match referee Sarah Garrett had immediately blown for the penalty after the foul and so it was left to penalty taker Elliot Sandy to competently convert the spot-kick to put United in front at the interval.

Just two minutes into the second half and United went close to extending their lead when a cross from the right by Jack Self saw Johnson’s header knocked away by O’Flaherty at full stretch for a corner. But from the resultant right wing corner taken by Winters, Johnson headed the ball home from the six yard line to make it 2-0.

The third goal arrived in the 57th minute when Darren Pond's low cross from the right down by the by-line was fired home by Johnson from eight yards into the top corner of the net giving O’Flaherty no chance.

It was all Banbury now and on 62 minutes Jack Self got the fourth goal when he struck a Winters cross from the left into the back of the Gosport net at the near post.

On 71 minutes United completed the scoring when substitute and Puritan debutant Leon Lobjoit crossed from the left on the edge of the Gosport penalty area and Ricky Johnson headed the ball into the corner of the net to complete his hat-trick.
