Empowering Every Learner, One Kick at a Time

Banbury United’s Home Education Hub: Supporting Alternative Learners in Our Community

At Banbury United Community Football Club, our mission extends beyond the pitch. We are proud to support our community through inclusive, engaging programmes that help every young person reach their full potential—regardless of their learning journey. One of our most meaningful initiatives is our Home Education Hub, held weekly at The Hill Community Centre in Banbury.

With around 18 children regularly attending, this hub provides a vital space for home-educated children to stay active, build social skills, and enjoy structured physical education sessions led by our experienced coaches.

Why This Matters
Home education in the UK is on the rise. According to the latest Department for Education (DfE) figures (published March 2024), over 126,100 children in England were recorded as electively home educated at some point during the 2022/23 academic year. This represents an increase of 16% compared to the previous year.

In Oxfordshire alone, there were more than 1,300 home-educated children in 2023—a significant and growing cohort that deserves the same access to high-quality enrichment, sport, and social engagement as their peers in mainstream education.

Bridging the Gap
Home-educated children often miss out on key developmental opportunities that come naturally in a school setting: regular team sports, peer interaction, and guided physical activity. Our Home Education Hub addresses these gaps by offering:

Structured PE sessions tailored to children aged 6–12

Social development through games, teamwork, and inclusive activities

A safe, supportive environment that welcomes all ability levels

Opportunities to build confidence, resilience, and wellbeing through sport

Feedback from local parents has been overwhelmingly positive, with many highlighting improvements in their children’s physical health, teamwork, and confidence since attending our sessions.

“These Home Education sessions have been going now for over a year. Initially supported by the National League Trust, we are now fully self-sufficient and working with more children than ever. The children attending love being able to socialise and play games. We are all really happy with the impact that these sessions are having with our home educated families locally.”
— Ryan Jones, Community Manager, Banbury United
