Book on the Banbury Spencer Years

Book on the Banbury Spencer Years

David Shadbolt20 Mar 2012 - 19:43

Request for Assistance on New Project

Local Historian Brian Little and the club’s current programme editor David Shadbolt are currently working on a joint project to produce a book, all being well in time for this coming Christmas, which looks at this club’s history covering the “Spencer Years 1931 to 1965”.

Brian has had published a number of books on local history. Most recently this has included three books covering the Changing Faces of Banbury, Grimsbury and finally Easington. These are 96 page paperback books retailing for around £10 and it is intended that the “Spencer Years” book will be in the same format, being published by the same people. The publishers have confirmed that they are very keen to take this book.

This will not be a statistical book but a look at the key events and interesting stories behind the 34 years of the existence of Banbury Spencer Football Club before the change to Banbury United. The book is intended to be of interest to as wide an audience as possible.

The co-authors would like to appeal for any Spencer Memorabilia that they could borrow to photograph, photocopy or scan which could be used as images to go inside the book. This is not limited to match photographs, as it could include player photographs, team photos, crowd photographs, caricatures, letters and all sorts of documents relating to the Spencer Years.

Specifically, they are very interested in obtaining a copy of the Colchester United v Banbury Spencer FA Cup First Round programme from season 1947/48, the Birmingham Senior Cup Final v Nuneaton Borough programme of 1948/49 and to get a photograph of any Banbury Spencer pin badges. But needless to say any football memorabilia with the name of Banbury Spencer on it would be of interest.

If you think you may have something of interest then please do not hesitate to contact either Brian or David.
