United’s Women’s side picked up their first win of the season this afternoon, beating Carterton Ladies away from home 3-2. An excellent result in what has been a difficult start to the season.
United went ahead after nine minutes when Sophie McCrystal slotted the ball home from the edge of the six-yard box. However, just two minutes later the home side drew level and in a very tight affair it remained 1-1 at the interval.
Just three minutes into the second half though and Banbury were back in front when captain Chloe Stallwood had the experience to get herself in the right place at the right time to knock home a ball in from the left at close range. Carterton were not fazed at going behind for the second time though and were back on level terms on the hour mark. Both sides looked to win the game as the second half developed further but it was Banbury’s Zoe Pugh who got what proved to be the winning goal when she fired home an excellent shot from 12 yards across the home custodian into the top far corner of the net (see photo), a goal worthy of winning any game!
This win for Banbury moves them out of the bottom two and up to ninth out of the 11 teams in the Thames Valley Counties Women’s Football League Division 1.
