Stalemate at Chasetown forces FA Cup replay on Tuesday night

(Emirates FA Cup, 2nd round qualifying)

It’s back to Banbury on Tuesday following this goalless battle on Saturday, and both sides will have to sharpen their shooting boots if they are to progress in this season’s competition. Things could have been so different if Luke Stokoe’s seventh minute effort from a Reece Styche cross had been an inch lower, rattling the crossbar before Chasetown ‘keeper Curtis Pond saved the rebound at the foot of the post.

Both sides probed without much success, a good move in the twenty seventh minute involving Josh Flanagan and Connor Ferguson was again foiled by Pond.

Chasetown gave themselves ongoing problems in the thirty seventh minute when Joseph Thompson earned himself a red card for a reckless challenge, and the hosts were then down to ten men.

After the break, United never looked in too much trouble defensively and Jack Harding had very little to do, but Chasetown looked a lot more organised than in the first half and battled well to keep their clean sheet intact, but they certainly rode their luck. Banbury managed to get the ball in the net on two separate occasions. Yaw Ofosu’s sixty fourth minute effort was ruled out for climbing the defender and then Styche saw his shot hit the back of the net, that was also ruled out, this time for a slightly more obvious violation against the defender.

The Puritans' best opportunity came in the seventy seventh minute after good work from Jon Lawson down the left. He squared the ball into the box for George Ball, who found himself in a promising position inside the six-yard area. However, his shot was hit straight at the keeper, and the chance went begging. A defender quickly followed up to clear, keeping his side in the tie and earning them a replay.
