With Jason Taylor injured, manager Billy Jeffrey opted to start new "work experience" signing from Northampton Alex Konstantinou up front with Nabil Shariff who was making his last appearance for United before returning to Rushden. Otherwise it was the same starting eleven that began the game against Cambridge City on Tuesday evening.
Chippenham began the game well and as early as the fifth minute should have scored when a cross from the left found the head of Lewis Powell but the striker put it wide. The pressure continued and it was no surprise when Chippenham took the lead in the 13th minute when Powell made up for his earlier miss by striking a shot from just outside the penalty area high into the net past Joe Murrell.
Banbury’s first decent chance of the game came in the 20th minute when they were awarded a free-kick just outside the area in a central position. David Staff hit the kick well and it was on target but Ian Gill produced an excellent save to push the ball away. This was though very much a one-off and Chippenham continued to dominate.
In the 25th minute a shot from Ashley Williams went just the wrong side of the post and two minutes later a Powell free-kick from just outside the area flashed inches wide. However Chippenham didn’t have to wait too long to double their advantage with Scott Lye getting the second on 38 minutes.
A rare attack for Banbury resulted in a corner in the 42nd minute and a home defender made rather a hash of it and sliced the ball on to his own post before it was cleared. However in stoppage time at the end of the first half Luke Gullick virtually wrapped the game up with a third goal for Chippenham.
The second half began as the first half ended with Chippenham dominant and they nearly stretched their lead in the 55th minute when a good save from Joe Murrell denied them and then the loose ball was hit goalward but hacked off the line by a Banbury defender.
On 61 minutes Alan Griffin fired the ball from 12 yards past an exposed Murrell to complete the scoring.
Banbury were, it has to be said, outplayed throughout the game with Chippenham firing on all cylinders from the start. Chippenham gave Banbury no time on the ball and hassled and harried whenever not in possession. Chippenham did look a very good side and Banbury can have no complaints – on the day it was simply all too much for Banbury!
