Dorchester Town 0 Banbury United 1 - Match Report

David Shadbolt7 Jan 2017 - 17:46

A late penalty converted by Mark Bell earns United the three points.

Mike Ford unsurprisingly started with the same side that had beaten Leamington last Monday.

The first 15 minutes was uneventful but at this point Banbury began to have much the better of the game.

In the 22nd minute Zac McEachran passed the ball through to Callum White down the right who then put in a low centre to Conor McDonagh but the United striker’s shot from the edge of the penalty area went just wide.

Two minutes later Martin Asiedu Ofosu passed the ball through to McDonagh down the right who crossed from the by-line to the incoming George Nash but the Banbury midfielder’s shot was well blocked by a Dorchester defender.

Banbury would continue to have the better of the remainder of the half but there was little to trouble either custodian.

Banbury were soon on top in the second half. In the 52nd minute a Marvin Martin corner from the right was only cleared back to him and he crossed hard and low, the ball going right across the six yard box but no Banbury player was quite able to get a touch on the ball.

Four minutes later a good forward run by McEachran to the edge of the Dorchester penalty area saw him put Jack Self through down the left hand side of the home penalty area but the shot from a narrow angle was comfortably saved.

Banbury were now totally dominant with Dorchester offering little going forward albeit defending well under a lot of pressure.

Six minutes from time and Self flicked the ball through from the edge of the Dorchester penalty area to Darius Browne, the Banbury substitute hitting the side netting from a narrow angle down the right.

Despite Banbury’s dominance it looked as though they would have to make do with a point but with five minutes to go a cross from the left by Marvin Martin was handled by Neil Martin at the near post and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot. Mark Bell stepped up and competently fired the ball home to the goalkeeper’s left into the top corner of the net.
