Tomorrow (Saturday) Banbury United entertain Gainsborough Trinity in the First Qualifying Round of the FA Cup 3.00pm kick-off

Lincolnshire side Gainsborough Trinity currently play at the same level as Banbury in the football pyramid but in the Northern Premier League Premier Division. Trinity have a rich history of playing at a higher level, having been members of the Football League from 1896 to 1912 and more recently they spent 14 years in Conference North until being relegated to the Northern Premier League at the end of season 2017/18.

Trinity have not made the best of starts to the season, having gained just four points from five games, albeit three of those points came in a 2-0 win over Whitby Town who are currently second in the table. Their 4-2 home defeat to Lancaster City last Saturday will have been particularly disappointing.

United will go into the game with plenty of confidence having won their last three games. A narrow win at the Banbury Plant Hire Community Stadium against Barwell was followed by impressive on the road victories at Bromsgrove Sporting and Peterborough Sports, the latter three points on Tuesday taking the Puritans to the top of the table, albeit having played one game more than all those around them.

Remarkably, though the clubs have never played one another in the FA Cup or FA Trophy, tomorrow will not be the first time the clubs have met in a competitive fixture. The clubs have met twice before, that was in season 1970/71 when drawn together in a two-legged semi-final of the Anglian Floodlit Cup, a competition that United entered for three seasons in the early 1970s, though quite how we qualified geographically I am rather unsure! The first leg up in Lincolnshire saw the home side win 3-1 and with the second leg ending 3-3, it was Trinity who advanced to the final. Another interesting fact is that the trip to Gainsborough back in March 1971 is the furthest North that United have ever travelled for a competitive fixture!! There is a two page article in tomorrow’s matchday programme on these Anglian Floodlit Cup games

Matchday Tickets (pay at turnstile):

£7 – Senior Citizens - 65+

Tomorrow’s game is sponsored by Smiths Newsagents of Banbury

Away supporters are advised to use OX16 5AB for their Sat-Nav as the club’s official postcode may well take you elsewhere!

It is free to sit in the stand

Hot Food available in the Clubhouse.

Free parking at the ground

As a larger crowd than normal is expected for this game, it would be very helpful if local supporters who know their way around could use the old Chiltern Railway car park on Tramway Industrial Estate which is available for use, free of charge thanks to Chiltern Railways. Enter Tramway from Swan Close Road and the car park is at the bottom of the road on the right. Alternatively, please consider car sharing. Note that due to the main station car park now having an ANPR system, Chiltern Railways can no longer offer us part of their car park for free use when we have larger than normal crowds expected.

Please note that due to a function in the Clubhouse in the evening, the bar and main clubhouse room will close at 6.00pm.

Why not have a go on the club’s 50/50 draw! One big prize and this has been around £200 at recent games – you have to be in it to win it!!

And finally, tomorrow’s programme includes a look back at an archive club programme from the early 1950s when Banbury Spencer played Reading based club Huntley & Palmers in the First Qualifying Round of the FA Cup. That takes up four pages – Shadders is likely to be sacked from the job of writing historical articles for the programme because that is “taking the biscuit” – I will get my coat!!!
