United exit Birmingham Senior Cup on penalties at Lye Town

NDroUND

A much changed United side exited the Birmingham Senior Cup at the Second Round stage going out to Midland League Premier Division side Lye Town on penalties after the game had finished 1-1 at 90 minutes.

Lye Town had slightly the better of the opening twenty minutes but it would be United who would take the lead in the 21st minute when good build up play involving NIcholas Kalakoutis and Darius Browne ended with a cross from the left hand side of the Lye penalty area by Louis Joyce being knocked home in the centre by Leam Howards from six yards out.

After taking the lead United looked rather comfortable and they went close to doubling their advantage on the half hour mark when Darius Browne went on a mazy run into the Lye penalty area before his shot 10 yards out from a narrow angle went just over the bar.

However, it got a lot harder for United in the 38th minute when to the assistant referee flagged the referee over for a lengthy discussion. The referee then, to everyone's amazement, showed a straight red card to Joyce for an off the ball incident which he had seen.

The early stages of the second half were dominated by the home side. However, United still looked dangerous when they were able to get forward and on 55 minutes should have made it 2-0 when Howards was put through on goal but with just goalkeeper Curtis Pond to beat, he blasted the ball well over the bar.

Lye though continued to dominate and the equaliser would come in the 68th minute when the ball bounced around the Banbury penalty area and with the United defence unable to get the ball away it was eventually turned in by Kevin Nickle.

With the boost of an equaliser Lye became even more dominant but United still looked dangerous on the break and in the 83rd minute Kalakoutis could have put Banbury back in front but he shot over from ten yards out when he should really have done better.

United did finish the game well and in the final minute a Kalakoutis effort from 12 yards was saved by the home custodian's legs.
