Match Preview - AFC Sudbury

. Banbury United9 Apr - 16:34

A relegated AFC Sudbury visit the Spencer Stadium, powered by Egg, this weekend.

This Saturday marks the penultimate home game of the 2025/26 campaign for the Puritans, who will be aiming to secure their first three points since early March.

After an impressive nine-game unbeaten run spanning over 100 days, United’s form has dipped sharply, with just two points taken from their last seven outings. That run has effectively ended hopes of a late play-off push, but manager Kelvin Langmead has emphasised the importance of finishing the season strongly.

Speaking on social media, Langmead urged his players to play with pride, both individually and for the club, as the campaign draws to a close.

In their most recent outing against Harborough Town on Easter Monday, Luke Stokoe’s thunderous strike gave Banbury the lead midway through the first half. However, the hosts responded emphatically, scoring five goals to condemn United to a heavy defeat and round off a disappointing Easter weekend.

The Suds

David Hennessey’s side were relegated on Easter Monday following a 3–1 home defeat to Needham Market in an all-Suffolk derby.

Their drop from the division has come as little surprise, with Saturday’s visitors enduring a difficult campaign from the outset. They have managed just one win in 2026.

Relegation from Step Three of the non-league pyramid comes just two years after their promotion via the play-offs in 2022/23.

In terms of form, the Suds arrive having lost three consecutive matches, with just one win in their last 18 outings. Defensive struggles have been a major issue, with only two clean sheets all season and over 100 goals conceded, comfortably the highest tally in the league.

Marcel Lewis is their leading threat going forward, with eight goals to his name this season.

Previous Meetings

One of AFC Sudbury’s six victories this season came at home to the Puritans back in early September, when an 87th-minute Kane Gilbert goal secured three points for the Suds.

Last season, Banbury took four points off Saturday’s visitors, winning 2–1 away in Suffolk after a 1–1 draw on the Suds’ last visit to Banbury in August 2024.
