Match Preview - Bury Town

. Banbury United11 Feb - 13:21

Banbury United look to continue winning start to 2026.

Weather disruption continued to hamper Banbury’sincreasingly busy schedule last weekend, with the trip to Halesowen falling victim to the elements. It leaves The Puritans facing their first match in two weeks. The further disruption now means United have had five matches postponed, in all competitions, since the 20th December.

Having been such a disrupted period for Langmead’s men, his side have not allowed it to halt their momentum, with Banbury looking to make it a fifth straight win when Bury Town are the visitors on Saturday.

The Spencer Stadium, powered by Egg, has become a tough place for travelling sides in recent times, with Banbury having lost just once in their last seven home games.

The two-week hiatus meant the 1-0 victory at home to Barwell at the end of January was United’s last outing.

The home side come into the game sat in 10th place, five points off the play – offs but with games in hand on all but one of the sides up to fifth place.

The Blues -

Bury Town secured promotion from the Isthmian North into the Southern League Premier Central at the end of the 2024/2025 season. Cole Skuse’s men currently sit 12th in the table, two places and one point behind The Puritans. An impressive unbeaten run stretching back to early December has seen Bury climb steadily up the table over the past two months.

Tuesday night brought another three points for the visitors, with a win away at Royston Town extending their league run to nine games unbeaten. It also marked a fourth consecutive away victory, contrasting their early season struggles on the road, having won just once away from home prior to December.

Ollie Canfer’s 13th-minute strike against Royston saw him move joint top of The Blues scoring charts alongside George Quantrell. The hosts will also need to keep a close eye on Jamie McGrath, who has chipped in with seven goals of his own so far this campaign.

With both sides enjoying strong unbeaten runs and carrying plenty of momentum, this fixture at the Spencer Stadium, powered by Egg, promises to be one of the most competitive of the season.

Previous meetings -

Banbury United and Bury Town met at the Spencer Stadium in the FA Cup Fourth Qualifying Round in October 2020, where Banbury came from behind to win 2–1 thanks to second-half goals from Jack Self and Henry Landers, after Ollie Hughes had put Bury ahead in the first half.

That was the first meeting of the clubs since the Blues had a five-year spell in the Southern League in the 1970s. The most recent meeting took place in the league earlier this season at Ram Meadow, with Bury Town winning 2–1. Connor Ferguson gave Banbury the lead before George Quantrell levelled for Bury, Tommy Hughes firing the winner for the hosts late on.
