Banbury United travel to PIMS Park on Tuesday evening looking to build on Saturday’s hard-fought victory over Stamford AFC when they take on a Peterborough Sports side enjoying a strong start to their Southern League Premier Division Central campaign.
Kelvin Langmead’s men secured a valuable 3-2 win against Stamford on Saturday, providing a timely boost ahead of a challenging away fixture. The Puritans will need to carry that attacking threat into Cambridgeshire against opponents who have already demonstrated their quality this season.
Kick-off is at 7.45pm on Tuesday, 13 October, with both sides having plenty to play for as the league campaign develops.
Banbury United
The Puritans head into the contest after finally getting back to winning ways in the league with Saturday’s success over Stamford. The three points were particularly important after a difficult run that included defeats against Leiston, Anstey Nomads and Stratford Town, alongside a goalless draw away at Worcester City.
Banbury had shown signs of improvement before the weekend, but Saturday’s result offered a reminder of the attacking potential within Langmead’s squad. However, conceding twice against Stamford means the visitors will know that defensive concentration will be crucial against a Peterborough side capable of scoring goals.
Levi Steele and Alex Prosser have some of United’s main threats this season. Their ability to turn promising attacks into clear-cut chances could prove decisive against Tuesday’s opponents.
Neo Dobson’s loan has ended with the Puritans and returns back to his parent club Northampton Town - we’d like to thank him for his efforts and professionalism whilst with us.
Langmead will be keen to see his side build some consistency after an inconsistent opening to the campaign. With another away fixture against Bromsgrove Sporting to follow on Saturday, a positive result at PIMS Park would provide valuable momentum for the weeks ahead.
Peterborough Sports
The hosts will provide a stern test, with Peterborough Sports sitting seventh in the table on 19 points from 11 matches, having recorded five wins, four draws and two defeats. Their form has been particularly encouraging in recent weeks, with victories over Leiston and Rushall Olympic among their results.
There has also been a significant change in the dugout. Mark Ducket was appointed permanent manager on 6 October, having initially taken charge on an interim basis following Graham Drury’s departure in September. Ducket arrived at Peterborough Sports from Real Bedford, where he had spent four years as assistant manager, and has overseen an encouraging start to his tenure.
The hosts possess several players capable of causing problems. Forward Leon Lobjoit is among the attacking options in Ducket’s squad, while Ben Beresford provides a further choice in the forward line. In midfield, Michael Richens offers another option as Peterborough look to control proceedings and create opportunities.
Previous meetings
The two clubs have faced one another several times in recent seasons, including during their National League North campaigns. Peterborough Sports have generally enjoyed the better of the more recent encounters, winning 3-0 at Banbury in February 2024 and 2-0 at home in October 2023.
However, Banbury have already demonstrated that they can get the better of their opponents this season. The Puritans claimed a 3-1 victory at Peterborough Sports in the FA Trophy third qualifying round on 26 September, giving Langmead’s side a timely reminder that they are capable of winning at PIMS Park.
