Banbury United travel to Stamford AFC on Tuesday night looking to secure back-to-back victories for the first time since early March. The Puritans head into the fixture on the back of an impressive home win over AFC Sudbury, where goals from Luke Stokoe and Josh Flanagan sealed a convincing result.
While there may be little at stake for Banbury at this stage of the season, the situation is very different for the hosts. Stamford find themselves battling to avoid relegation from the Southern League Premier Central, making this a crucial encounter in their fight for survival. Three points on Tuesday night could prove vital.
Speaking after Saturday’s victory, Langmead praised his side’s performance, particularly given the squad’s current limitations. With resources stretched, he highlighted how impressed he was with the team’s effort despite being “down to the bare bones.” One bright spot was Max Fuller, making an impressive first league start.
Langmead also stressed the importance of maintaining standards and finishing the season positively, ensuring performances do not drop off in the closing stages of the campaign.
There are, however, some concerns on the injury front. Alex Prosser remains a doubt as he continues to struggle with an ankle issue, which was aggravated in the recent fixture against Royston Town. He is hopeful of returning before the end of the season.
Banbury’s away form will also be an area of concern heading into the fixture. The Puritans have picked up just one point from their last five matches on the road, a run they will be eager to improve.
The Daniels
After finishing sixth last season and narrowly missing out on a play-off place, Stamford would have hoped to build on that momentum. However, this campaign has proved more challenging.
Graham Drury’s side had to wait until November for their first league win and currently sit just one place and three points above the relegation zone. That said, recent form suggests they will continue to fight their way to safety. The Daniels have lost two of their last five matches, winning two and drawing one, and are unbeaten in their previous ten home games at The Zeeco Stadium.
That strong home record presents a stern test for a Banbury side who want to finish the season as strongly as possible. With Banbury finally securing a clean sheet for goalkeeper Jack Harding, the Puritans will be determined to maintain their defensive solidity. Stamford’s attacking threats — including Leon Lobjoit and leading scorer Kai Sanchez-Tonge — will need to be at their sharpest to trouble the visitors’ defence.
Previous Meetings
This season’s reverse fixture came in November, where goals from Josh Flanagan and Keegan Bloom helped United to a 2–0 victory.
Before then, the sides met for the first time since 2006/07 last season, the Puritans winning 1-0 at home in September 2004 before losing 2-0 at the Deeco Stadium in April 2005.
