Banbury United

Banbury United come into the game with fresh optimism as the club have appointed Kevin Wilson as manager, marking a homecoming, returning to the club where it all started for him.

Wilson said: “I’m delighted to come back to my roots at Banbury United and manage the Club at this point in its history.

“The time is right. I love this club.”

Not only has the club been boosted with the belief of having a new manager in charge, but United have also seen an uplift in the past two results, winning back-to-back home games for the first time since November 2022. These results have taken Banbury to 16th in the Vanarama National League North, five places and seven points above the drop with two games in hand.

McKay’s four-day tutelage started with a 1-0 win on Saturday to promotion chasing Scarborough. Lawson D’ath scored the only goal in the game, earning three precious points. The Puritans took the momentum into Tuesday’s fixture against Darlington and ensured the 3 points stayed in Oxfordshire. Manny Maja’s fine strike and Charlie Wallers' finish proved enough, as Banbury made it two wins from two.

Chester

Chester come into this game with ten points under their belt from their last five outings.

The Seals sit fourth in the league and have seen an upturn in form to propel them into a play-off position after an initial slow start to the season.

Callum McIntyre is in his second year of management despite only being 30 years of age and he guided Chester to third place in the National League North table last term, before beating beaten in the Play-Off Semi Finals by Brackley Town. He was named National League North Manager of the Season for 2022/23 – as his side went 21 matches unbeaten away and had the best defensive record in the league. This time the 30-year-old is looking to go one better and achieve promotion, with his side portraying the same defensive stability as last season, already amassing 18 league clean sheets in 30 games.

George Glendon is leading the goalscoring charts for the Seals this term with eight goals so far to his name in the league as well as scoring in the club’s 2-1 defeat to York City in the FA Cup First Round.

Previous encounters

Last season’s home fixture saw an entertaining 2-2 draw with both teams wanting to express their attacking styles. This was a thrilling encounter, with both sides taking the lead and getting pulled back.

March 2023 saw United’s first visit to the Leap76 stadium. Banbury were 3-0 down at half time and despite two early second half goals setting up the possibility of a comeback, a Kurt Willoughby free kick put the game to bed.

This season’s matchup saw Banbury pick up their first home win of the season Tope Obadeyi solo goal was enough to separate the two sides.
