Aylesbury United 3 – 2 Banbury United Women
Brave Banbury Push Hosts All the Way in Narrow Defeat
Banbury United Women produced a solid and spirited performance on Sunday, pushing Aylesbury United all the way in a closely contested encounter that could easily have ended with a share of the points.
The Puritans began brightly, creating early chances and pressing high, but it was the hosts who struck first, taking a 1–0 lead in the 9th minute. Banbury regrouped well, yet a swift Aylesbury counterattack in the 16th minute doubled the deficit despite United’s promising start.
Undeterred, Banbury maintained their composure and were rewarded on 25 minutes. Following a well-worked corner, Melissa Tovey reacted superbly to sweep home from the angle of the six-yard box, giving her side deserved momentum heading into half-time.
The second half saw Banbury start on the front foot once again, with both sides exchanging opportunities in an open spell of football. The visitors’ belief paid off in the 63rd minute when Kyra Cotter stepped up and delivered a stunning left-footed free-kick from 25 yards, bending the ball into the net to level the score at 2–2.
Aylesbury responded with sustained pressure, but Banbury’s defensive line stood firm with determination and organisation. Unfortunately for the Puritans, the hosts restored their lead in the 84th minute through a free-kick of their own, leaving Banbury little time to find another equaliser.
Despite the result, the team showed character, resilience, and a commitment to play brave. Qualities that suggest a positive result is not far away. The performance was full of promise, and the group can take confidence into the fixtures ahead
